Pointwise Best Approximation Results for Galerkin Finite Element Solutions of Parabolic Problems

چکیده
In this paper we establish a best approximation property of fully discrete Galerkin finite element solutions of second order parabolic problems on convex polygonal and polyhedral domains in the L∞ norm. The discretization method uses of continuous Lagrange finite elements in space and discontinuous Galerkin methods in time of an arbitrary order. The method of proof differs from the established fully discrete error estimate techniques and for the first time allows to obtain such results in three space dimensions. It uses elliptic results, discrete resolvent estimates in weighted norms, and the discrete maximal parabolic regularity for discontinuous Galerkin methods established by the authors in [16]. In addition, the proof does not require any relationship between spatial mesh sizes and time steps. We also establish a local best approximation property that shows a more local behavior of the error at a given point.

A Priori Error Estimates for Three Dimensional Parabolic Optimal Control Problems with Pointwise Control
In this paper we provide an a priori error analysis for parabolic optimal control problems with a pointwise (Dirac type) control in space on three dimensional domains. The two dimensional case was treated in [30], however the three dimensional case is technically much more involved. To approximate the problem we use standard continuous piecewise linear elements in space and piecewise constant d...
متن کاملA Best Approximation Property of the Moving Finite Element Method
The Moving Finite Element method for the solution of time-dependent partial dierential equations is a numerical solution scheme which allows the automatic adaption of the nite element approximation space with time. An analysis of how this method models the steady solutions of a general class of parabolic linear source equations is presented. It is shown that the steady solutions of the Moving F...
متن کاملA Priori Error Estimates for Space-Time Finite Element Discretization of Parabolic Optimal Control Problems Part II: Problems with Control Constraints
This paper is the second part of our work on a priori error analysis for finite element discretizations of parabolic optimal control problems. In the first part [18] problems without control constraints were considered. In this paper we derive a priori error estimates for space-time finite element discretizations of parabolic optimal control problems with pointwise inequality constraints on the...
متن کاملFinite Element Exterior Calculus for Evolution Problems
ABSTRACT. Arnold, Falk, and Winther [Bull. Amer. Math. Soc. 47 (2010), 281–354] showed that mixed variational problems, and their numerical approximation by mixed methods, could be most completely understood using the ideas and tools of Hilbert complexes. This led to the development of the Finite Element Exterior Calculus (FEEC) for a large class of linear elliptic problems. More recently, Hols...
متن کاملA Posteriori Error Estimates for Nonlinear Problems. Finite Element Discretizations of Parabolic Equations
We give a general framework for deriving a posteriori error estimates for approximate solutions of nonlinear parabolic problems. In a first step it is proven that the error of the approximate solution can be bounded from above and from below by an appropriate norm of its residual. In a second step this norm of the residual is bounded from above and from below by a similar norm of a suitable fin...
